GRANT, Charles

GRANT, Charles. Bombay 22.2.1836 — London 12.4.1903. Sir. British Civil Servant in India. Son of —> Robert Grant, educated at Harrow, Trinity College (Cambridge) and Haileybury. Went to India in 1858, served in the N.W.P. and Central Provinces. Secretary to the Chief Commissioner 1861, Commissioner 1870. Then Judicial Commissioner and in 1879 Chief Commissioner, in 1879-80 Member of Governor-General’s Legislative Council, 1880 acting Home Secretary and 1881-85 Foreign Secretary to the Government of India. C.S.I. 1881, K.C.S.I. and retirement in 1885. Married Elizabeth Ellen Baillie (d. 1885), then 1890 Florence Lucia Harris, three sons.
