MOUW, Johan Andréas dèr (nom-de-plume Dèr Mouw or Adwaita). Westerwoort near Arnhem 24.7.1863 — ’s-Gravenhage 8.7.1919. Dutch Poet and Philosopher. Son of Jacobus Cornelis dèr Mouw (orig. Dermauw) and Anna Elisabetha Zillinger. Educated in Deventer, from 1883 studies of classical languages, philosophy, and Sanskrit (under Kern) at Leiden. Ph.D. 1887, diss. 1890. Teacher in Zwolle, Doetinchem (1888-1903), Bergen, and Rijswijk (1904). In 1906 settled in the Hague. Married 1893 Hendrika Wijnanda van Enst, no children.

Dèr Mouw wrote on philosophy (he was a Hegelian), and from 1912 Indianizing poetry under the name Adwaita.
