BRUINING, Albertus. Pietersbierum, Friesland 2.7.1846 — ’s-Gravenhage 20.11.1919. Dutch Theologian, began as an Indologist. Son of Johannes Br., a minister, and Wiepkjen Peters. Studied Theology at Amsterdam and Leiden, then Indology with Deussen and wrote a dissertation on the Brahmasūtra Commentary of Śankara, which he presented in 1871 at Leiden University (to Kern). Dr.theol. 1871. In 1871-1900 he served as a minister, from 1900 as a Professor of Theology at Amsterdam University, also teaching comparative religion. Married with Alida Huygens, children.
