BURY, John Bagnell. Clontibret, co. Monaghan 16.10.1861 — Rome 1.6.1927. British (Irish) Classical Scholar and Historian. Professor in Cambridge. Son of Rev. Edward John Bury and Anna Rogers, Anglican canon of Clogher. Educated in Londonderry, studies at Trinity College in Dublin. In 1893-1902 Professor of Modern History at Trinity College, from 1898 also Regius Professor of Greek. From 1902 Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge and Fellow of King’s College. Hon. Litt.D. Oxford 1902, Durham and Dublin, hon. LL.D. Edinburgh, Glasgow 1901 and Aberdeen 1905. Died in Italy. Married 1885 with Jane Bury (his second cousin), one son.
