BUTTERWORTH, Alan (or Allan). Southport, Lancashire 25.7.1864 — London 25.5.1937. British Civil Servant in India. Son of Henry B. and Mary Jane Schofield. Educated at Elizabeth College in Guernsey and studied from 1883 at Balliol College in Oxford. In 1886 joined I.C.S. in Madras. From 1897 Deputy and Sessions Judge in Dharwar, 1898 Divisional Judge in Jubbulpur, 1900 Collector and Magistrate in Nellore, 1906 Secretary to Government, Local and Municipal Department, 1912 Member of Madras Board of Revenue, 1914 Chief Secretary to Government of Madras. Retired in 1918 and returned to England. Married 1897 Alice Colclough, five children.
