ZUBATÝ, Josef. Prague 20.4.1851 — Prague 21.3.1931. Czechoslovakian Indologist and Slavic Scholar. Professor in Prague. Studied classical philology, Czech, Sanskrit and Comparative Linguistics at Prague (under Ludwig). Ph.D. 1883. PD 1885 Prague, in the Czech branch of the University, succeeding Vaníček in Sanskrit teaching. From 1894 Professor of Sanskrit and comparative IE there (1891 eo., 1896 ord.). After his retirement (1925) the chair was divided (Sanskrit for Lesný, IE for Hujer). Hon. Ph.D. 1928 Brno.

Zybatý was mainly a linguist (in good collaboration with the philologist Winternitz), who studied rhytmic and metrical element of language. He was much interested in the interpretation of the Ṛgveda and in comparative IE linguistics. In the controversy about the origins of Indian drama he took an intermediate stand. He was also interested in Baltic languages(also Latvian), and in his later years(after 1910)mainly concentrated on the history of Czech. To the Neogrammarian school he kept a distance, instead of sound laws and etymology he was more interested in word formation, semantics and syntax. He wrote many articles, but never a book.

Zybatý had a number of students, under his guidance were completed many dissertations in Indology (Fr. Kamaryt 1917, A. Šebestová 1919, Z. Materna 1925, S. Šmelhaus 1925), IE (J. Jedlička 1894, V. Lesný 1908, B. Sládeček 1918, M. Brožová 1921, V. Machek 1921) and Slavic philology (Emil Franke 1904, Josef Baudiš 1907, A. Boháč 1911, J. Straka 1914, J. Kořínek 1924, J. Mrázek 1925, M. Tadrova 1925, Fr. Němeček 1925, V. Foch 1925, V. Jiřička 1925).
