BELSER, Carl William. New Washington, Ohio 21.12.1860 — Boulder, Colorado 28.1.1898. U.S. Linguist. Professor in Ann Arbor and Boulder. Son of a clergyman, Herman Frederick B. (1829–1900) and Mary Kocher (1837–1887). B.A. 1882 from University of Michigan, then also M.A. In the 1880s taught Latin at Mount Morris College and Carhage College, both in Illinois. In 1887 went to Leipzig. Ph.D. 1889 Leipzig (Delitzsch). Then at University of Michigan: instructor of German and French 1889, of German and Hebrew 1890, from 1891 Assistant Professor of Oriental Languages. Taught German, Hebrew, Akkadian, Arabic, Hellenistic Greek (mainly New Testament) and Sanskrit. He was more interested in Semitic and soon dropped Sanskrit. Failing health forced him to seek for better climate (1893) and he became the Head of Latin Department at University of Colorado, but died then of tuberculosis. Married 1887 Susan S. Mishler, three daughters and one son.
