COTTON, Arthur Thomas. Combermere, Cheshire 15.5.1803 — Dorking, Surrey 24.7.1899. Sir. British Colonial Officer in India. General. Son of Henry Calvely C. and Matilda Lockwood. After Addiscombe joined Madras Engineer Group in 1819, served first in the U.K., arrived at Madras in 1821. Conducted various surveys in South India. In 1825-26 participated in the first Anglo-Burmese war. Constructed irrigation and navigation canals in Andhra. In 1848-50 on sick leave in Australia. Chief Engineer 1852. Retired in 1860. K.C.S.T. 1877. Married Mary Ann Seyes, three daughters and two sons.
