COSTA, Baltasar da. 1534? — 1580. S.J. Father. Portuguese Missionary in India and Japan. In the age of 17 joined S.J. 1551 in Goa. In 1563 came to Macao (unclear, Pfister is silent about him) and soon continued to Japan. Somewhat differently in eve.fcsh.uml.pt: born around 1538, joined the S.J. in Goa in 1555, ordained priest before 1563, came to Japan 1564, left 1576 and soon also left S.J. (dismissed by Valignano). He is also called the founder of the Madurai Mission, but perhaps here confused with the younger —> B. da Costa (1613–1673). Thus it remains unclear, whether he should be included here at all.
