EWER, Walter. London 1784 — London or Middlesex 5.1.1863 (when 78). British Civil Servant in India. Son of Walter E., then Governor of British Bencoolen (Bengkulu) in Sumatra, and Elizabeth Atkins. In 1803 joined Bengal Civil Service. Served in Bengal, Amboina and Delhi, finally Judge of Upper Provinces. Retired in 1840 and spent the rest of his life in London. Member of the Court of Directors. Lay astronomer, measured the exact location of many places.
