HARRIS, Henry. Mountrath, county Laois, Ireland 3.1.1758 — Madras 10.8.1822. British (Irish?) Physician in India. Son of John H. and Sarah Deaves. M.D. Arrived in 1783 at Madras. Married 1786 in Madras Jane Charles, three sons and two daughters. His dictionary deals with the Dakhanī form of the language.

Publications: Dictionary, English and Hindoostany: to which is annexed a copious and useful alphabetical list of Proper Names of Men, Women, Towns, etc., a great Majority of which appear to be of Persian, Arabic or Indian Origin. 7+345 p. Madras 1790 (this is called vol. 2, but vol. 1. was not completed, the manuscript is in the British Library).
