DÜNTZER, Johann Heinrich Joseph. Köln 12.7.1813 — Köln 16.12.1901. German Schoolteacher and Philologist. After Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Köln studied from 1830 at Bonn and from 1835 at Berlin classical philology and Sanskrit (under Bopp). PD 1837 Bonn. Noting that his changes for a chair were meagre he took in 1846 the office of librarian at Katholisches Gymnasium in Cologne. His early interests in classical philology and Sanskrit had changed into literature, he wrote poems and won some recognition as a Goethe scholar. Active Catholic.
