LEXER, Mattias (Ritter von). Liesing im Lesachtal 18.10.1830 — Nürnberg 16.4.1892. Austrian Germanist in Germany. Son of Andreas Lexer, a mill owner, and Elisabeth Goller. After gymnasium in Klagenfurt studied first law at Graz, but soon switched to German, then also at Vienna. After two years (1855-57) as teacher in Cracow further studies at Berlin, now also under Bopp. Ph.D. 1860 Erlangen. From 1863 ao. Professor at Freiburg (Br.), 1866 ord., from 1868 Professor at Würzburg and from 1891 at Munich. At Würzburg also taught Sanskrit in 1871-73, then left it to Jolly. Bavarian title of personal nobility 1885. Married 1864 Auguste Hackmann, two sons and two daughters.
