FENIGER, Siegmund (Nyānaponika Mahāthera). Hanau 29.7.1901 — Forest Hermitage, Kandy 19.10.1994. German Bauddha and Buddhist scholar in Sri Lanka. Born in Hessen in a merchant family and had Jewish education. Lived then in Oberschlesien working in a bookshop. In 1922 the family moved to Berlin, where he became acquainted with Buddhism. Founded a Buddhist circle in Königsberg, but in 1935 had to leave Germany, first to Austria. In 1936 he came to Ceylon, studied under Nyānatiloka (—> Gueth) and obtained full ordination in 1937. During the war interned in Dehra Dun, spent his time translating canonic texts into German. In 1946 returned to Kandy Forest Hermitage, from 1952 its principal. In 1958 among founders of Kandy Buddhist Publication Society, worked as its director until 1984. From the 1960s to the early 80s visited several times Europe, especially Switzerland.
