TOMASCHEK, Wilhelm (Vilém Tomášek). Olmütz, Moravia (now Olomouc in Czech) 26.5.1841 — Vienna 9.9.1901. Austrian (Czech) Geographer and Oriental Scholar. Son of gymnasium teacher Johann Adolf T. (d. 1849), a German family with Czech name. Gymnasium in Vienna. Studies of classical philology, linguistics, history and geography at Vienna 1860-64, then gymnasium teacher in St.Pölten and Vienna. From 1877 ao., 1881 ord. Professor of geography at Graz, from 1885 Professor of historical geography at Vienna, taught there until death. Corresponding 1882 and full member of Vienna Academy 1899. Except a short visit to London never travelled outside Austria.
