GOWEN, Herbert Henry. Great Yarmouth, Norfolk 29.5.1864 — Bainbridge Island, Washington, U.S.A. 6.11.1960. British Priest and Oriental Scholar in the U.S.A. Professor in Seattle. Son of Henry Cobb G. and Mary Fuller, educated at St.Augustine’s College in Canterbury (A.B. 1888). Deacon 1886, priest 1889. D.D. 1912 Whitman College. In 1886-90 in charge of mission in Honolulu, 1890-92 curate in Great Yarmouth, 1892-96 Rector of St. Barnabas in New Westminster, British Columbia. In 1897-1914 curate of Trinity Parish, then of St. Barnabas’ Chapel, both in Seattle, also in charge of Japanese Mission in Seattle. In 1900-45 Professor of Oriental Studies at University of Washington. Emeritus 1945. Married 1892 with Kate Anne Green, two daughters and three sons. He was a polyglot who knew several Asian languages, including Sanskrit.
