GRANT, Robert. Bengal, India 1779 — Dapuri 9.7.1838. Sir. British (Scots) Civil Servant in India. Son of —> Charles Grant, came to England with family in 1790. Educated at Magdalen College, Cambridge. “Called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn, 1807. M.P. for various constituencies from 1818 to 1834; advocated Jewish emancipation from civic disabilities. Judge Advocate General, 1832. Governor of Bombay from March 17, 1835, knighted in 1834; and G.C.H. Died of apoplexy.” Gave his name to the Grant Medical College in Bombay. Married Margaret Davidson, father of —> Charles Grant and three other children.
