HARLEZ DE DEULIN, Charles-Joseph, chevalier de. Huy/Liège 21.8.1832 — Louvain (Leuven) 14.7.1899. Belgian Oriental, especially Iranian scholar. Professor in Louvain. Son of Conrad-Lambert de H. and Marie-Antoinette de Reul de Bonneville, of local nobility of Liège. Concluded law studies at Liège in 1858. Also attended a seminary and became priest (1858). In 1858-62 he worked as advocate, then 1862-65 as teacher and rector in Huy. Retired because of an illness, now devoted his time for learning Oriental languages from books (in 1865-71). From 1871 until his death Professor of Oriental Languages at Louvain (succeeding Nève), taught mainly Sanskrit, Iranian and Sinology.

As a scholar Harlez was learned and elegant, but somewhat superficial and hasty. After years of Avestan studies he thought to have completed this line and moved on to Sinology. In addition to Avestan, Sanskrit, Chinese and Manchu, he was interested e.g. in Hungarian, and discussed the history of the crusades, the religion of ancient Peru, the inscriptions of Eastern Island, and many other subjects. He was the founder and editor of Le Muséon. Among his students were Casartelli, Colinet, van den Gheyn, La Vallée Poussin and Lecoutere.
