HATCH, Emily Gilchrist  (née Emily Harriet Gilchrist). 1897 — 1982. Mrs. U.S. Specialist of Kerala culture. For a while worked as an actress. Ph.D. 1935 Cornell University, Ithaca N.Y. She married 1921 Duane Spencer Hatch (1888–1963), an agriculturalist, who served in WW I in India and Mesopotamia and later went to India with his wife to assist rural development in collaboration with YMCA, especially among Dalits. They were in India (Kerala) more than 20 years and in 1942 moved for similar work to Mexico, later, having retired from YMCA, also in Costa Rica and Sri Lanka. Her husband wrote several books on Indian social questions. Her daughter, Nancy Shakuntala H., married —> Louis Dupree.
