BÜCHI, Ernst Carl. Adorf, Thurgau 3.9.1914 — Löhningen, Schaffhausen 1.11.1982. Swiss Physical Anthropologist. Professor in Berlin. Grew up in Thurgau, school in Schaffhausen. Studies at Zürich, Ph.D. 1942 under Schlaginhaufen. Assistant, then PD of geography at Zürich. Second Ph.D. 1949 Copenhagen. From 1950-58 Superintendent in Department of Anthropology in Calcutta, conducted fieldwork extending from South India to the Himalayas. Back in Switzerland taught biology at schools in Zürich and Schaffhausen, but also working on his field data. From 1966 ord. Professor of Anthropology at F. U. Berlin, emeritus 1979. Last years lived in Klettgau near Schaffhausen. Married, children.
