HAUSCHILD, Richard Wilhelm. Roschütz, Kr. Gera 2.12.1901 — Jena 15.2.1972. German (East) Indologist. Professor in Jena. Son of a farmer, matriculated from the Gymnasium of Gera, where Rudolf Rau (the father of Wilhelm Rau) inspired him with Indology. Studies of classical, German and Oriental philology at Tübingen, Leipzig (Hertel) and Jena (Debrunner). Ph.D. 1926 Jena, 1927 Staatsexamen in Greek, Latin and English, 1929 Assessorenexamen für das Lehramt an höheren Schulen. Then taught long time languages at schools in Jena, from 1938 also as Universitätslektor at Jena University (Greek and Latin, from 1943 also taught Sanskrit). In 1939-41 and 1944-45 served in the army, in 1945 was taken badly wounded as prisoner of war by the U.S. He started his university career at Jena rather late: PD 1948, from 1951 Professor mit Lehrauftrag, from 1954 Professor mit Lehrstuhl. In 1959 Member of Sächsische A.W. Emeritus 1.9.1967. He planned new works in retirement, but soon got a hypertony, which little by little invalided and in the end killed him.

Hauschild attracted attention with his dissertation, but during the years as a teacher of classical languages he published very little. With Indology he dealt again only 25 years after his Ph.D. He was a student of Hertel and somewhat influenced by his strange ideas, with which he tried to find an intermediate position. He was a good philologist, but preferred traditional approach to linguistics (denied to accept the laryngals). His main work was the completely revised edition of Thumb’s Handbuch. Its etymological glossary has been styled excellent (by Mayrhofer). In East Germany he had difficulties to remain up to date with foreign scholarship. He was also interested in the history of scholarship. Among his students was Morgenroth.
