GOULD, Basil John. Worcester Park near London 29.12.1883 — Yarmouth, Isle of Wight 27.12.1956.Sir. British Civil Servant in India, Political Officer in Sikkim, Bhutan and Tibet. Son of Charles Gould and Ellen Utterton. After Winchester College studies at Oxford (New College). Joined I.C.S. in 1907. In 1912-13 British Trade Agent in Gyantse, Tibet. Later seven years in Iran. From 1926 in British Legation in Kabul, then in Malakand and Waziristan and from 1933 in Baluchistan. In 1936 he led a delegation (including Richardson) to Lhasa, again there in 1940. Last position as Political Officer in Sikkim and for Bhutan and Tibet. Knighted 1941. Married 1921 Lorraine Macdonald Kebbell (d. 1935), two sons, and later Cicely Brent-Good, one son. In 1936-41 made some amateur films in Tibet.
