HOOLE, Elijah. Manchester 1798 — London 17.6.1872. Rev. British Missionary in India. Son of Holland Hoole, a shoemaker, educated at Manchester. In 1820 he went to India as a Wesleyan missionary, participated in the Committee for revising the Tamil Bible in Madras. In 1828 left India because of ill-health and became Superintendent of Schools in Ireland and 1836-72 one of the General Secretaries of the Wesleyan Missionary Society. Married 1835 Elizabeth Chubb, at least one son.
