HOLLAND, Thomas Henry. Helston, Cornwall 22.11.1868 — Carshaltan, Surrey 15.5.1947. Sir. British Geologist in India. Son of John Holland and Grace Treloar Roberts. Parents moved to Canada, but he grew up in Helston. Studied geology at Royal College of Science. From 1890 Assistant Superintendent of Geological Survey of India and curator of Geological Museum and Laboratory, also lectured at Presidency College, 1903 Director of Geological Survey. Retired in 1910, returned to the U.K. and worked in Royal Commission on Fuel and Engines. In 1922-29 Rector of Imperial College in London and 1929-40 Director of Edinburgh University. K.C.I.E. 1908. Married 1896 Frances Maud Chapman (d.1942), then 1946 Helen Ethleen Verral, one son and one daughter with the first wife.
