MACKENZIE, David Neil. London 8.4.1926 — Bangor, Wales 13.10.2001. British Iranian Scholar in Germany. Professor in Göttingen. Son of David M., educated in Slough, Windsor and Cambridge. From November 1943 to December 1947 in army, from August 1944 to September 1945 served in India and Burma, then until July 1947 in N.W.F. Province, where he learned Pashto. In 1948 started studies at S.O.A.S.: B.A. 1951 in Persian (under Lambton), M.A. 1953 in Old and Middle Iranian (under Henning). October 1954 to September 1955 in Iraq and Syria studying Kurdish. Ph.D. 1957 London. In 1955-61 Lecturer in Kurdish at S.O.A.S., in 1961-65 Lecturer in Iranian Studies, in 1965-75 University Reader in Iranian Languages ibid. From 1975 Hinz’s successor as Professor of Iranian Studies at Göttingen in Germany. Retired in 1994 and settled in Bangor. Twice married, three sons and one daughter.

During his early years he mainly worked on Kurdish and Pashto, later on Sogdian, but the Pahlavi dictionary is perhaps his most important contribution.
