MAINE, Henry James Sumner. Kelso, Roxburghshire 15.8.1822 — Cannes, France 3.2.1888. Sir. British Lawyer and Legal Historian in India. Son of Dr. James Maine and Eliza Fell, educated at Christ’s Hospital, London. From 1840 studies at Pembroke College, Cambridge (B.A.). Called to the bar from Lincoln’s Inn 1850. In 1847-54 Regius Professor of Civil Law at Cambridge, from 1852 also Reader in Roman Law at the Inns of Court. In 1862-69 Legal Member of Supreme Council in India, also 4 years Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. Returned to England in 1869, in 1871-78 Corpus Professor of Jurisprudence, Oxford. In 1871-88 Member of Council of India, 1877-88 Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. From 1887 Whewell Professor of International Law at Cambridge. K.C.S.I. 1871. Married with his cousin Jane Maine (1827–1920), two sons.
