MAFFEI, Angelo Francesco Saverio (Angelus Francis Xavier). Pinzolo, Val di Rendena, South Tyrol (Alto Adighe) 12.11.1844 — Nellikunja near Kasargod 31.5.1899. Father. S.J. Italian Missionary in India. After classical studies at Collegio Vescoville in Trento he started clerical studies and was sent to Università Gregoriana of Rome. Joined the S.J. in 1871 and served as teacher of mathematics and philosophy in Padova, Bressanone, Scutari (Shkodër in Albania) and Zara (Dalmatia). Joined the Mangalore mission in 1878 and immediately started the study of Indian languages. Travelled much in southern Karnataka. In 1891-96 Rector of Collegio di S. Luigi in Mangalore. Fellow of Madras University.
