Professor in Würzburg, in 1938-52 in the U.S.A. Son of Nicolaus N., a trader, and Paula Riesenfeld. Studies at Breslau and Berlin, Ph.D. 1915 under O. Schrader at Breslau. From 1923 PD at Breslau, also taught at local gymnasium. From 1929 ao. there and from 1930 ord. Professor at Würzburg, in 1933-38 in forced retirement on racial grounds (mother’s Jewish background). In 1938 emigrated to the U.S.A., from 1938 Associate Professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 1943 same at Graduate School, Fordham University, New York. From 1952 again ord. Professor of Indogermanistik at Würzburg. Emeritus 1958. Married 1929 Helene Cramer, no children.
