From 1862 worked for London Missionary Society in Salem, Coimbatore and from 1891 in Madras, retired 1908 and returned to the U.K. Fellow of Madras University 1892.Ph.D. 1902/03 Bern (Rees: 1900 Basel). Married 1864 Mary Jane Lechler (d. 1867) and 1875 Mary Collier, children.
