CARTER, George Edward Lovelace. Exmouth, Devon 1886 — 24.2.1974. British Civil Servant in India. Son of a local builder, John Carter (1862–1938) and Ellen Ann Balmano (d. 1896), studied Geography and Modern History at Oxford. B.A. Joined I.C.S. in 1910. He was Assistant Collector in Bombay and at Tatta, then Municipal Commissioner in Hyderabad, 1916-18. Retired 1926 to Budleigh Salterton, Devon, qualified as a barrister at Gray’s Inn, but did not practice and concentrated on family business and local archaeology. Married 1914 in India Ivy Octavia Wakefield (1885–1967), four children. He was especially interested in the history, archaeology and folklore of the province of Sindh.
