RENOU, Louis Marie Joseph. Paris 28.10.1896 — Vernon (Eure) 18.8.1966. French Indologist. Professor in Paris. School and studies in Paris. The WW I interrupted his studies and he had to spend two years as prisoner of war. After the war he continued Indology under Lévi (also Meillet, Bloch and Foucher) and graduated in 1920. Following the example of Bergaigne he concentrated on Vedic, though originally also pursued Greek studies (Chantraine was his close friend). Ph.D. 1925 Paris. In 1925 he succeeded Lacôte as Professor of Comparative Grammar and Sanskrit at Lyon, but returned soon, 1928, to Paris to succeed Finot at É.P.H.É. In 1936 succeeded Foucher as Professor of Sanskrit at Sorbonne and in 1946 Pelliot at A.I.B.L. In 1948-49 visiting Professor in Poona, in 1953 at Yale. In 1954-56 director of Maison Franco-Japonaise in Tokyo. Married Marie-Louise Sjoestedt (d. 1940) and Marie-Simone (1912–2001, translated Conze’s Le bouddhisme dans son essence et son développement. P. 1971), two sons and one daughter with the second.

Renou was one of the greatest scholars of the Veda and Indian grammatical tradition, but also interested in classical Sanskrit poetry. As Vedist he followed the example of Bergaigne, Oldenburg and Geldner attempting to interpret texts in Indian context and as a whole. He was much engaged in semantics. His major works include the unfinished translation of the Rigveda, two grammars, grammatical terminology, the editions of Pāṇini and the Durghaṭavṛtti, altogether about 60 books and numerous articles and reviews. He was a popular teacher who concentrated on Sanskrit leaving comparative linguistics to Minard.Among his many students were P.-S. Filliozat, Y. Ojihara, A. Padoux and S. Siauve.
