ROADARMEL, Gordon Charles. Kharagpur, West Bengal 2.2.1932 — Berkeley 15.6.1972. U.S. Indologist (Hindi Scholar). Son of missionary parents, grew up in India, educated in Mussoorie (graduated from Woodstock School). In 1948 came to U.S.A., studied at Wooster College, Ohio (B.A. 1954 in English). After one year at Chicago Theological Seminary he left theology and began studies at University of California, Berkeley: M.A. 1957 in English. After a while as school teacher he returned to Berkeley and passed M.A. in Asian Studies in 1962, then further studies of Hindi at Allahabad University. In 1963-65 taught Hindi in Chicago, then as Assistant Professor (first only acting) at Berkeley. Ph.D. 1969 Berkeley. Died after another stay in India, just before his promotion to Associate Professor.
