Educated at Merton College, Oxford [Boden Sanskrit scholar there]. Joined the Civil Service in the Panjab, 1863, and retired, 1893. Was Chief Judge of the Panjab Chief Court and Vice-Chancellor of the Panjab University.” In retirement living in Oxford. K.B. 1897. LL.D. Pennsylvania. Married 1865 Elizabeth Gaskell (d. 1891), two daughters and three sons.
