MASCARÓ FORNÉS, Joan (Juan Mascaro). Santa Margalica / Santa Margarita, Mallorca 8.12.1897 — Comberton, Cambridge, U.K. 19.3.1987. Spanish (Catalonian) Poet, Translator and Philologist. Son of a farmer family. School in Palma, then worked in British consulate in Palma. Studied English, Sanskrit and Pāli at Cambridge and in Jaffna. From 1933 Professor of English at Barcelona. After Spanish Civil War moved to the U.K. Hon. dr. University of the Balearic Islands. Married 1951 Kathleen Ellis, two sons and one daughter.
His original first name was Catalan Joan, but because it was confused with English feminine Joan he used the Spanish spelling Juan.
