WÄLIKANGAS, Eino (until 1906 Buddén). Savonlinna 11.10.1889 — Helsinki 4.3.1960. Finnish Diplomat, former Student of Indology . Son of Emil Johannes Buddén, a teacher, and Johanna Augusta Granit. Matriculated 1907 from Savonlinna school. Studies at Helsinki. Wrote his M.A. thesis in German philology in 1914, but planned a dissertation in Indology (under Reuter). After graduation also taught Sanskrit at the University (1915 & 1919). In 1918 joined the new diplomatic service of Finland and served partly in Finland, partly in Berlin, Washington, and as Ambassador in Buenos Aires (1934-37) and Rio de Janeiro (1937-45). Retired in 1947, but served then in Foreign Ministry in Helsinki in 1948-56. Married Annie Modeen (divorce 1933).
Publications: No publications related to India (except an encyclopedia article on Tagore). The manuscript collection in Helsinki University Library contains a paper about ancient Indian state and a Finnish translation of the Nala episode and of the Sakuntalā.
