WISE, Thomas Alexander. 1801 — 1889. British (Scots) Physician in India. Graduated in medicine, Edinburgh 1824. In 1827-51 in Indian Medical Service, soon became interested in Āyurveda. He studied Sanskrit and achieved an extensive collection of artefacts illustrating the traditions and religions in Northern India and Tibet (now in Dundee Museum). In retirement returned to Scotland and now began to study local antiquities.
