STACK, Edward. 1850 — at sea 12.1.1887.  British (Irish) Civil Servant in India. Studied at Queen’s University, M.A. Joined I.C.S. 1872, served in North-West Provinces, also visited Iran in 1891. From 1882 the first Director of Land Records and Agriculture in Assam. Learned quickly Assamese and began studying tribal languages, soon concentrating on Mikirs. He had health problems and took furlough, intending to go to Australia, but died just before reaching Adelaide.
