BELL, Harry Charles Purvis. India 21.9.1851 — Kandy 6.9.1937. British Archaeologist of Sri Lanka. Son of general H. W. B. Bell, from 1864 educated at Cheltenham College. From 1873 in Ceylon Civil service, served in various positions, finally district judge in Kegalla. In 1890-1912 Archaeological Commissioner for Ceylon with headquarters in Anuradhapura. Worked long alone, later with a few helpers (D. M. de Z. Wickremasinghe and John Still). Retired in 1912, but stayed in Ceylon the rest of his life, living in Kandy. Married 1876 Renée Sabine Fyers (d. 1933), three sons and three daughters.

Bell did pioneer work in Ceylon (excavated at Anuradhapura) and in the Maldives (which he visited several times in 1879 and in the 1920s) showing i.al. that the latter had been Buddhist before Muslim conversion. He was lazy with his reports and his excavation methods soon became antiquated, but he showed keen interest in conservation. He also wrote on Ceylon religion (ethnology) in the 1910s.
