NEILL, John William. 184? — 19??. British Civil Servant in India. Studies at King’s College, London, and Edinburgh. From 1864 served in Central India (1872 in Chhindwara). In 1887 and 1890-91 acting Commissioner in Nagpur. Retired 1894. In 1896-1917 Professor of Indian Law and Lecturer in Marathi at University College in London, then Reader of Marathi at S.O.A.S., 1937 called Professor. Fellow of Calcutta University 1883. Married 1872 Charlotte Mary Waddington.

One Scottish J.W. Neill of I.C.S. was son of John Neill and Isabella Mather, married, one son (findagrave on his son, also I.W.N.). According to werelate.org J.W.N. of I.C.S. in Chindwara, born 1853, married 1872 on Bengal Charlotte Mary Waddington. According to worldstatesmen.org J.W.N., born 1845, was acting Commissioner in Nagpur 1887 and 1890-91.
