Studies at Kazan under Baudouin de Courtenay et al. Kand. 1880. PD 1881 Kazan, for comparative linguistics. Mag. 1884, now Docent of Comparative Grammar of IE Languages at Kazan. Doctor 1888, now eo. Professor of Sanskrit and Comp. Grammar (in charge of chair from 1886, succeeding Kruševskij). From 1893 ord. Professor of the same at Kazan. He retired early, in 190?. He is known as a pioneer of experimental phonetics in Russia. Also a Turcologist.
