MAGGI, Pietro Giuseppe. Milano 31.8.1817 — Milano 5.2.1873. Italian Scholar interested in Indology. Son of Giovanni Antonio Maggi. Ph.D. Member of Lombardian Academy. According to De Gubernatis “ingegno di vasta e minuta erudizione”, but published little. Married, children, his granddaughter was —> Pizzagalli’s mother.

It has been claimed that in the notes to his translation in 1847 Maggi was the first to note Sassetti’s linguistics observations, but from Gianluca Rognoni I learn that he was only the first to publish this information. Before him it was noted by the poet Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837), but his Zibaldone was only published posthumously in 1898.
