ROST, Ernest Reinhold. Ealing, London 22.8.1872 — Putney, London 23.6.1930. British Physician and Bauddha in Burma. Lieutenant-colonel (1915). Son of German parents, —> Ernst Reinhold Rost (1822–1896) and Minna Laue. Educated at Highgate School and at St.Mary’s. M.R.C.S. & L.R.C.P. 1895, joined Indian Medical Service 1896. Worked as civil surgeon in Burma, also Superintendent and Lecturer at at Rangoon Medical School. In WW I served in East Africa and in Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919 on the North-West Frontier of India. Retired in 1922. Back in the U.K. practiced in Putney, London. O.B.E. 1918.Rost was also a scholar. He conducted important work on leprosy and established a connection between beriberi and rice consumption. He established the first bacteriological laboratory in Burma. In Burma he also interested in Buddhism.
