ASSAS Y EREÑO, Manuel de. Santander 28.6.1813 — Santander 16.6.1880. Spanish Historian and Oriental Scholar. Born of Santander oligarchy, in 1825-27 at Seminario Conciliar de Burgos, then studies of law at Madrid (graduated 1836). In 1838-39 studied architecture at Instituto Cántabro. In 1839-57 worked in Semanario Pintoresco Español, finally its director. From 1852 travelled in France, Germany and Russia, in Paris 1852 studied Sanskrit, Celtology and Egyptology. Later on (1857) taught Sanskrit at Madrid. From 1861 worked in National library.
