GITEAU, Madeleine. Nantes 7.6.1918 — Chilly-Mazarin (Essonne) 25.2.2005. Mlle. French Art Historian, Specialist of Khmer Art. After studies of history and geography, she went in 1946 to Cambodia as teacher. Interested in local art and archaeology, on a furlough in Paris in 1951 started the study of Sanskrit (certificat 1961), diplom of E.P.H.E. 1966 under Filliozat and Bareau. From 1956 member of E.F.E.O. as Conservator in the Museum of Pnom Penh, until 1970, in 1966-68 also taught Khmer art at royal university. Several research visits to Thailand, Indonesia and Laos. In 1970 returned to France. Ph.D. 1974 Paris-III. In 1977-81 maître de recherche at E.F.E.O., then from 1981 Professor of History and Civilization of South and South-East Asia at Paris-III, retired 1985. In 1994 living in Chilly-Mazarin in France. Last visit to Cambodge in 2000.
