SCHERZL, Vincenz (Vikentij Ivanovič Šercl’, Čeněk Šercl). Beroun, Bohemia (Czech) 28.9.1843 — Ljubljana 4.12.1906. Czech Indologist and IE Scholar in Ukraina and Russia. Professor in Har’kov (Har’kiv) and Odessa. Educated in Prague, in 1861-64 studied law at Prague, but used much time for learning languages. In 1866-67 studies of Chinese, Japanese and Urdu at King’s College in London, then Sanskrit and Avesta under Kossovič at St.Petersburg. Kand. 1868 St.Petersburg, mag. 1869 ibid. (in Sanskrit). From 1869 Docent of comparative linguistics at Har’kov. Ph.D. 1880 Moscow. In 1880-85 Professor of comparative linguistics at Har’kov and 1885-1906 at Novorossijskaja Universitet in Odessa. Married.

Scherzl is mainly known for his syntactic studies, mostly written in Russian. In both universities he also taught Sanskrit. Known as a polyglot, the “Czech Mezzofanti”. Among his students was Popov.
