STACKELBERG, Reinhold Otto Georg, Baron von. Abia/Livonia (now Abja in SW Estonia) 25.9.1860 — Moscow 21.12.1907 (5.1.1908). Russian (German of Livonia) Iranian Scholar, specialist of Ossetic and Persian. Son of Reinhold (Roman) Johann Woldemar von St. (1819–1878) and Henrietta Augusta Charlotta Freiin von St. (1839–1889). He attended gymnasium in Pernau (Pärnu), Munich (?), Arensburg (Kuressaare) and Fellin (Viljandi). In 1879-81 studied law and 1881-82 comparative grammar at Dorpat (Tartu, under L. Meyer), then Oriental languages at Strassburg (Hübschmann, Nöldeke, Leumann) and Leipzig (Brugmann, Leskien). Ph.D. 1886 Strassburg. In 1891-92 PD für orientalische Sprachen Leipzig. From 1894 Professor of Persian at Lazarevskij Institute in Moscow. Committed suicide. Apparently unmarried.
