COHEN, Sulman Samuel. Basra, Iraq 1895 — Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai 1980. A Baghdadi Jew in India. Eldest of the eleven children of a very poor Jewish family he came to Bombay as a young man, worked as shop assistant and trained as accountant. There he also joined Theosophical Society and then moved to Adyar, where he lived five years in the 1920s. From 1936 pupil of Ramana Maharshi. Lived in India Sri Ramanasramam his guru in 1936-55. Two years after Ramana’s death he moved to Vellore and worked as a homeopath. Finally retired in poor health and returmed to Tiruvannamalai. Beside Hinduism he always kept his Jewish identity and participated in discussions in Jewish circles.
