KÖLVER, Bernhard

KÖLVER, Bernhard. Ründeroth near Köln 2.4.1938 — Leipzig 27.11.2001. German Indologist. Professor in Köln, Kiel and Leipzig. Son of a gymnasium teacher, who participated in WW II and died soon after his return from captivity. Educated in Wertheim, Gummersbach und Fort Myers (Florida). From 1956 studies linguistics, Anglistics, Germanistics and eventually also Indology at Kiel, Glasgow, Göttingen and Frankfurt a.M. Ph.D. 1964 Frankfurt under W. Thomas. In 1966-67 worked in Staatsbibliothek Munich, now started Dravidian studies. From 1967 Janert’s Assistant at Köln, PD 1969 Köln. In 1970-72 the first Director of Nepal-German Manuscript Preservation Project in Kathmandu. In 1972-76 apl. Professor at Köln. In 1976-93 Professor and Head of Orientalisches Seminar at Kiel, in 1987-88 visiting Professor at Kathmandu. From 1993 Professor at Leipzig, took early retirement 9 months before his death. Member of Sächsische A.W. 1995. Married with Ulrike Kölver, who also worked on Newari.
