From 1927 studies of Indian and Indonesian philology at Leiden, Ph.D. 1936 (under Krom). Museum Curator in Jogjakarta in 1938-45, then 1945-57 eo. Professor at Amsterdam. From 1957 Professor Archaeology and Art History of South and Southeast Asia at Leiden, emeritus 1977.
Publications: Enkele grepen uit de iconografie van Harītī in de Oost-aziatische kunst. Amsterdam 1947; many articles on Indonesian art and iconography, often in Dutch.
