TREWEEK, Athanasius Pryor

TREWEEK, Athanasius Pryor. Sydney 29.12.1911 — Sydney 20.1.1995. Australian Classical Scholar, Linguist and Mathematician. The only child of teacher Walter Henry Treweek (b. 1866 in Cornwall, d. 1920) and nurse Mary Matilda Dwyer (1872–1953). After Saint Ignatius’ College in Riverview he studied classics and mathematics at Sydney. Ph.D. 193?. From 1938 taught at Sydney, finally Professor of Greek there. During WW II belonged to a team breaking Japanese codes. Married 1942 Hazel Elizabeth Logue (1919–2005), a teacher and Shakespearean scholar, three daughters and one son.
Among other things Treweek knew some Sanskrit and taught it in the 1950s at Sydney, where Emmerick was his student.
Publications: Diss. on Greek geometry; other writings on classical philology.
